The problem
Many students experience fear and anxiety when exercising in a public gym setting. This can stem from various factors, including fear of judgment from others, intimidation of doing an exercise wrong, prevailing gym stereotypes, uncertainty about where to begin, lack of a structured workout plan, and the absence of a gym partner for support and motivation. These challenges can create barriers to a positive and effective wellness experience.
Initial hypothesis
The lack of confidence and fear of judgment plays a big role in gym anxiety.
Students want to feel accepted and that they belong in the gym community.
Gym stereotypes (such as “gym-rats”) make people who are on the outside really feel like they are on the outside.

Research
Google surveys: 15 people participated in answering 10 questions.
16 face-to-face interviews: Lack of confidence in how to use equipment, not having a gym partner, convenience, and sports teams were big factors in having gym anxiety

Problem statement: College students need a supportive wellness community because active partners boost motivation, accountability, comfort, and a sense of belonging, making it easier for non-active students to engage in healthy habits.
Ideation
App: students can be matched with a wellness partner
Event: students receive colored bracelets to find and match with others
Scavenger hunt: students get clues to find different wellness stations around campus
Monthly challenges: students receive a calendar with different wellness challenges
Mood boards
Execution
Momentum is an app that allows students to build a profile and match with a wellness partner at their school. Students and their “match” can then plan workouts, join clubs, and set goals to keep each other accountable and motivated.
